| Choosing a career | The lifeblood of your future is your career. At one time or another, many of us have got to choose careers which should go a long way to see us through the economic turbulence of this world. In most cases, when we choose our careers,we are being influenced by our parents who are self-centred about them. They always want us to belong to the class of disciplines like law, medicine, and engineering without regard for our abilities to be able to achieve them. | | Some parents have been heard as saying to their children that they want them to become lawyers, doctors, and engineers like the sons of Mr.A and Mr.B. They aspire to see their children call doctors, lawyers, and engineers as well climb the ladders of leadership in these areas, regardless of what it takes to be there. Some parents do not ever think there are other disciplines in which their children could be absorbed and as well be of good use to the society in which they belong. | | When examinations are conducted for admissions into our university campuses,we see that a lot of candidates always apply for these courses, while a number of the other courses are left with or without candidates to fill them. This is to show the non-chalant attitude of people towards them. The blame for this attitude could be left on the doorsteps of our parents. In many cases where parents have influenced the decision of their kids towards choosing a career, the end result is chaos, crisis, and fiasco. | | When you are choosing a career the first thing that should cross your mind is whether you would be able to cope with the career discipline you have chosen.Do not be a copy-cat. Do not say that because your friends have chosen to become doctors, lawyers or engineers, then you too would choose to become one of them.Think of your ability to be able to cope with it first. Do not allow your parents to influence your decisions as regards this, because your parents won't be in the university campuses with you while you carry your cross all alone.Your parents may wish you were a doctor, lawyer,or engineer but the onus is on you to choose what you can cope with for they won't be in the campuses to help you with the load of courses you would have to undertake to qualify you to become any of these. | | Going down the memory lane, this brings me to the story of a young chap who was admitted into the university for a course he didn't have ability, but on the advice of his parents. This chap's decision to become a medical doctor was influenced by his parents. In the process of working to qualify as a medical doctor,he went through a lot of stresses and strains to the extent that he always broke down and could not pass to qualify. At a point,he became depressed and dejected to the extent that he had to take his life, for he said he could not face the shame of dropping out of this discipline, and this,to the regrets of his parents. | | From the foregoing,i would advise parents to learn from this and stop influencing their children's decisions as regards their careers. |
